A detox is a simple and highly effective way to promote overall body health

There are a number of myths and celebrity-backed products that give a detox program a bad name; however a detox is a naturally occurring bodily-function that can be boosted when a proper plan is followed.

Detoxing is best performed through a number of different ways at the same time. Why not pick a few from the list below and get started today!

  1. Eat Garlic – this is packed full of sulphur-containing compounds that activate the enzymes within your liver that is responsible for removing and eliminating toxins from the body. It also contains allicin and selenium which protects the liver from toxic damage.
  2. Eat Leafy Vegetables which are effective in neutralizing heavy metals within the body as well as eliminating herbicides and pesticides found on non-organic produce.

  4. Eliminate alcohol which puts a toxic strain on your liver
  5. Eliminate refined sugars and sweeteners which create an inflammatory response within your body, as well as stripping your body of key minerals, vitamins and nutrients that it needs to effectively function.
  6. Visit a sauna where toxins will be removed from your body via sweat.
  7. Include Turmeric in your diet which is a powerful anti-inflammatory that in addition protects liver damage and has been shown to also improve overall gallbladder function that helps in the body detox process.
  8. Increase your daily water intake to 3-4 litres per day of filtered, spring water. Water is essential in the detoxifying process of the body, and must be consumed for effective detoxification to occur.
  9. Eat Granny Smith Apples which are high in pectin which binds to toxins, try and add these to a juice everyday
  10. Take more naturally occurring Vitamin C – which is great for the immune system.
  11. Deep breathing – effective deep breathing calms the soul and mind as well as helping us to feel more energized, making better use of the nutrients we are putting into our bodies
  12. Eat more legumes – these are jam-packed full of fibre that will improve your body’s ability to eliminate waste. However, ensure you pressure-cook these to remove the protein lectin which is a potential source of inflammation.
  13. Develop a positive mindset which will detox both the mind and the body, allowing for peace and calmness in healing your body.
  14. Eat ½ Grapefruit a day – grapefruits are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, which are two great liver cleansers. It’s also high in naringenin which promotes fat-burning rather than fat-storage within the liver.
  15. Drink Green Tea as this contains a plant antioxidant called catechins which research has shown burns fat that accumulates within the liver.
  16. Walnuts help promote oxygen supply in your blood, an all-important process in detoxing the body.
  17. Remove silver-fillings from your teeth that generally contain mercury amalgam, which will seep into your blood stream as they break down over time. A holistic dentist will be able to remove this safely and change them to safe fillings free from heavy metals.
  18. Avocadoes are rich in glutathione-producing compounds that promote overall liver health.
  19. Add Coriander to your food which binds and locks to heavy metals in your blood, organs and tissues, helping to eliminate them from your body.
  20. Eat blueberries – they are rich in anthocyanin which helps reduce inflammation throughout the body and brain as well as preventing bacteria sticking to bladder walls, allowing for a deeper cleanse.
  21. Quit Smoking which will eliminate the toxic burden that is carried throughout your blood and body.
  22. Do a coffee enema. Yes you’ll have to be brave however it’s known to be one of the most effective detoxing methods around. The coffee will stimulate the liver to produce Glutathione S Transferase, a chemical that is one of the most powerful detoxifying agents in our body.
  23. Reduce your exposure to old paint which up until the 1970’s contained toxic levels of lead. Lead is another heavy metal that permeates your body leading to possible long term chronic health conditions.
  24. Limit eating tuna and swordfish, which are known to contain higher amounts of mercury, a heavy metal that must be eliminated from the body.
  25. Experiment with acupuncture which has roots in cleansing the body from toxins as well as its better known use for naturally healing the body. Acupuncture is often used in drug detox programs for its powerful effects in removing toxins from the body.

  27. Add Milk Thistle to your diet which contains Silymarin a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory which is used in the treatment of liver problems.
  28. Incorporate High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) into your daily schedule. 20 mins of HIIT will deliver a highly effective training session that will ignite your body’s excretory system, removing waste from your blood as well as removing waste through the skin by means of sweating.
  29. Choose organically grown produce which are free from herbicides and pesticides and won’t be genetically modified in their DNA structure.
  30. Consider your body washes which may be made up of a number of harmful chemicals. Instead use products which are made up natural ingredients. Remember what you wash into your skin will eventually need to be removed via the body’s natural detoxification process so choose wisely. Be aware of products that promote natural ingredients, however have a range of chemicals in the product as well.
  31. Change your laundry detergent to an all-natural one. Our clothes are against our skin all day, every day, so it’s important that your detergent isn’t harmful to your body.
  32. Change your fabric softener to a healthy, natural option. Like the laundry detergent there are companies that sell effective and all-natural detergent and fabric softeners. These are a better choice and should be considered, particularly if you have any skin irritations.
  33. Exfoliate and remove dead skin from the outermost layer of your skin, which will clear up your pores allowing for better ongoing detoxifying.
  34. Fast for a period of time drinking only clean, purified water. For thousands of years fasting has been a means of healing the body, allowing it to rest and regenerate. A one-off fast can be for over 24 hours, or you can fast everyday having your last meal at 5pm and not eating again till the next day at lunchtime.
  35. Add Apple Cider Vinegar to your drinks, which alkalize the body and helps detox the liver. Be sure to choose only the organic version of Apple Cider Vinegar.
  36. Consume Wheat Grass or Barley Grass, which are both extremely nutrient dense superfoods that alkalize and detoxify the body.
  37. Focus on Fibre Intake which helps flush out the nasties and improves the functioning of your digestive system. Brown rice along with fresh fruit and vegetables are the best source of daily fibre.
  38. Have a massage that focuses on blood flow and redistribution of energy, such as a Chinese Massage. A sports massage will also be effective as it’s a more intense massage that promotes healing across the body as well targeting the body’s pressure points.
  39. Sleep more! Your body rejuvenates and restores itself during sleep and without a good sleep each night your body will have a compromised immune system and lack the energy to effectively detox. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep in a pitch-black environment.
  40. Have broad-spectrum probiotics from your pharmacy. Most brands of probiotics only have a couple of strains of good bacteria. It’s important to have billions of good bacteria, but more importantly from a number of different strains, which generally come from practitioner only brands. Your gut is made up of over 1600+ known bacteria, so the greater the diversity of the probiotic the better.
  41. Eat foods high in beneficial bacteria by fermenting vegetables at home or making coconut kefir.
  42. Drink Kombucha and other drinks made of beneficial bacteria.
  43. Use Bentonite Clay, a powerful healing clay that comes from aged volcanic ash, which has been used for centuries around the world. This clay can be used to detox in a number of ways including as a face mask, clay poultice, skin care, in the bath and is even used as a medicinal drink that detoxes the body from harmful toxins from the inside out.
  44. Jump in the bath. Having a warm detox bath is a great way to both cleanse your body from contaminants as well as relax. Adding Epsom salt, baking soda and Betonite clay into your bath will bring about a great cleanse. Add some drops of lavender oil for an extra nice smell.
  45. Detox your mind and emotions by spending 10 minutes 1-2 times a day practicing relaxation or meditation techniques. A calm soul will result in a body that is prepared for healing.
  46. Refrain from pain killers or anti-inflammatories, which with sustained use can cause digestive issues including dysbiosis commonly seen through overgrowths of Candida
  47. Get involved in yoga which will help clear both the mind and body of toxicity. The calmer, cleaner and healthier the mind the cleaner and healthier the body.
  48. Brush to increase circulation through dry skin brushing. Your skin is your biggest organ in your body so it's important to focus on detoxing it. Dry skin brushing will improve circulation to the area and allow new blood to flow into the areas around that part of the body, removing out the old blood. Therefore it's a great idea to focus on your extremities including your hands, feet, legs and arms.
  49. Have a hot and cold bath/shower for optimal blood flow. This is a technique used by high performance athletes who wants to recover quickly from muscle soreness. They jump into an "ice bath" which is generally at a temperature around 12 degrees celcius, and then jump into a bath around body temperature. By doing this it stimulates blood flow back to the major organs while in the ice bath and then new nutrient-rich blood is pumped back out to all areas of the body in the warm bath. This cycle can be repeated for a minute on and a minute off for a maximum of 10 minutes.
  50. Enter into positive environments to mentally detox. Whether that means removing negative friends from your life and surrounding yourself with more positive people, or speaking out positive affirmations over yourself throughout the day, a mental detox is just as important as a physical detox for your overall health.
  51. Experiment with effective bowel movements using the Squatty Potty which helps people defecate in the way we were designed to. Our modern toilets don't allow us to eliminate everything out of our bowels properly, which can lead to constipation, haemorrhoids, colon disease and pelvic floor issues. Detoxing requires the complete elimination of all toxins so therefore it's important to do this successfully on the toilet as well.
  52. Do oil pulling with coconut oil for 20 minutes each day which will cleanse the mouth of toxins and bacteria that builds up on the teeth, tongue and gums.
